A CONNOISSEUR’S EYE
Michael Foster Ltd.
The Personal Collection of the late Michael & Margaret Susands
TO BE OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
LOTS 500-808
Of all the many antiques dealers in London during
the 1970s to the early 2000s, Michael Foster Ltd.
epitomised style, character and quality in a way
that only very few managed to achieve. They
specialised in18th and early19th Century furniture
and had a true understanding of intrinsic merit
together with a rigorous approach to authenticity,
and further an appreciation of patina as can be
seen in this collection, and in the pages of the
Grosvenor House year books.
Michael Foster Ltd was the business of Michael
and Margaret Susands (née Foster – hence the
name). They had premises at 118 Fulham Road
for 30 years from where they operated, and sold
pieces of exceptional appeal. They exhibited
annually at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair
and their client list bulged with the top names of
industry, international society figures, actors and
even sports personalities. As the pictures show
the Royal Family were no strangers to their stand!
From their Chelsea base, they also built up a
wonderful collection of furniture, silver, glass,
ceramics and pictures. Their house was a
veritable treasure trove and was a testament to
their love of their profession. The collection on
show today demonstrates their unswerving
standards and of course their knowledge. They
really were arbiters of taste.
